DIY Slide Copier For Fun & Profit (4K)
A DIY slide copying rig. Some pointers follow.
Need:
- Camera/lens to be able to focus close enough for slide to fill sensor. Zoom lens. 12-45mm M4/3)
- Slide holder (hold 90 degrees to lens in all dimensions)
- Dark tube (length based on lens at distance for slide to fill sensor) Keeps out ALL light.
- Big, bright, consistent light source at a distance.
1) Bright (white), flat light source.
a) Color balance for your camera settings
b) CONSISTENT artificial light is best (no fall off or hot spots)
c) No visible patterns from light (move light as far away as possible, see depth of field)
d) Avoid finger/equipment shadows
e) Make the light source square to the slide, at the same level
2) Open f-stop. Minimum depth of field = open f-stop (WANT a blurry background past the slide)
2.a) BUT you need enough depth of field to compensate for slide curvature & emulsion thickness
3) Small ISO for maximum resolution
4) Aspect ratio 3:2
5) Focus across the slide (flatness) 90 degrees all directions to lens
6) Emulsion side of slide towards camera for sharpest images. Photographing through the clear plastic backing lowers sharpness. However you may need to flip the image horizontally with a photo editor
Note: There is always be loss in color/sharpness in making any copy. The goal is to minimize losses.
Also, some lenses are not good at this, as they may not provide sharp focus away from the center of the image. You want a flat field lens. Many macro lenses are good and they should not need an extension tube.
3D Printer Files: www.thingiverse.com/thing:6688312
================================================
NOTES:
1) Your tube diameter will vary with your lens diameter
You might be able to use PVC plumbing pipe rather than print one
2) Your tube length will vary with your lens / extender
3) Seal the tube against light leaks
My Camera: Lumix GX-8. M4/3rds
My Lens: 14-45 with 10mm extender tube
This was designed to get slides in and out fast. I use my fingers (carefully)
to hold the slide in place (avoid finger shadows!)
FLAME the 3D print surfaces to remove any tiny strings!!!
Slide Dimensions (plastic): 50mm x 50 mm x 1.75 mm
Opening: 34.72 mm x 23 mm The image is: 36 x 24 per standards ratio: 3:2
Diagonal is 41.18, so the pipe would have to be 42+ mm in diameter + camera lens.

Crystal Radio Wiper Upgrade 2.0 (4K)
Переглядів 472День тому
I've been looking to improve the wiper arm performance on crystal radios. First is to get rid of over-flex when moving the wiper arms. It makes it harder to tune, because the wiper arms flex and you have to guess where it will end up after you release it. I've moved from a 1.9 mm rod to a 3.1 mm rod for the arm. I also tried adding a second ball, and shorted the arm to see if that would help. B...

Crystal Radio Diodes--Schottkey vs 1N34A (4K)

There's been lots of trash-talkin' the 1N34A from Schottkey diode fans, with claims ranging from it being almost as good as the 1N34A to being far superior. Let's put them head to head in a test to see which one is better. Our referee, the oscilloscope, measures voltage over time, and not current. A diode rectifies current and not voltage. I made one with a four inch PVC and wound from one end to the other end. About four inches long. I did not use a diode i used a old copper penny and pencil lead. Like a fox hole radio. I picked up KDKA which i was about 20 miles from down town. I also picked up short wave. Hilverson Holand. When they had broadcast. 1977. I was a senior in highschool. No more short wave broadcast like back then. There are some from cuba and HCJB . 73

      @@menaz7880 It will carry more power.

    • @neoglider8709
      @neoglider8709 3 дні тому

      @menaz7880 16Amps mean the maximum rate of current that can flow through the wire can withstand 16Amps. If you ran the oscilloscope using the 10A power cable and the device demands 16Amps (or anything greater than 10amps) then the 10amps cable would likely overheat, melt and cause an electrical fire since more current is passing through it than it is rated for. Electric Devices normally will only pull the amount of current needed to operate it. Having higher rated cables are always safer. Matching amperage and voltage ratings when purchasing a replacement cable should always be considered for all electronics, especially high-power electronics or appliances.

Im will be speaking to Dr again about this before my other eye is done. But, it also sounds like an IOL replacement surgery is not a good idea for reasons you 2:54 mentioned in video 4. @tsbrownie 10 днів тому

      @Tweetybirdx Thank you. Please understand that eyes differ a lot and you can learn questions to ask from my experience, but you can't apply my specifics to yourself; you have to get your diagnosis from your doctor. If you don't trust your doctor, or they are not taking you seriously, it seems the only choice is a second opinion/ doctor. I know it's an inconvenience for your daughter, but eyesight is extremely important in every aspect of your daily life. I had the luxury of getting 6 different surgeons' opinions (family connections and doctor visits) and in the end their concensus was to leave my "wrong" eye alone for now and deal with the second eye. After the second eye was done that surgeon recommended I learn to live with my situation, and I have. I did not love that advice, and the outcome is not perfect, but it was a safe choice. Another doctor's input might well be worth the effort.

    I thought RF detection performance was what made a good diode. Your test setup is high audio range. Details on test setup, scope settings, amplitude, etc. would be helpful to evaluate the results. I believe the “wave stability” is an artifact of the scope sync settings rather than diode characteristics. Looks like you are using AC coupling on the scope, making it hard to see reverse current flow, if any.

    • @tsbrownie
      @tsbrownie 11 днів тому

      @df9999999999 In a crystal radio, you don't have to worry about the carrier the RF is way outside of human hearing. The diode is there to take half the AF signal to allow the earphone to work.

    • @df9999999999
      @df9999999999 10 днів тому

      @@tsbrownie The tank circuit must develop sufficient RF voltage to forward bias the diode and create a DC voltage that is completely independent of any AM modulation, and in the case of a simple half-wave diode circuit, pulses at the RF frequency of the carrier. Audio may be reconstructed from the positive RF pulses because the RF output level of the detector diode is proportional to the modulation envelope. The capacitor at the output of the detector acts as a low-pass filter on the rectified RF, allowing only the audio rate signal to pass to the headphones. But, the diode performance is based on its RF rectifying ability, not audio. I think you need a load resistor matched to the output impedance of the diode to get meaningful readings.

    So, I have had two circuit boards on a HVAC air handler in my crawl space go. The first was four years after the install and the second a year after that. Not good since they run in the upper $500 range here in NC to R/R. I didn’t get to see the first one that was replaced the installer took it with him. The second one was shown to me and yep, the white stuff you brushed off was on many parts of the board but on the top side rather than the bottom like you cleaned. My crawl space is very humid and I know what needs to be done but it’s super expensive and I can’t afford it right now however, I don’t want to replace circuit boards every year that we have unheard of heat and humidity. Would it be helpful for me to spray contact cleaner on the board like every month would that help to keep the corrosion in check? Or am I dreaming, Are there other ways that I could seal, coat, bag, cover or whatever to prevent the board from getting too much moisture?

    • @tsbrownie
      @tsbrownie 11 днів тому

      I don't know the voltages involved in your circuit board. Spraying them could cause fire, shorts, electrocution, etc. I've heard of something called a conformal coating, but I know nothing about them and have never used them. I have lived where it's very humid, and my solution was to add a small electronics pie fan to blow on the board constantly. It's not a perfect solution because humidity is still there (but this helps prevent water from condensing, which is a quick board killer), and it blows dust onto the board which needs to be cleaned (how often depends on the environment).

    One question, the diodes used has a threshold before they conduct a signal that can be detected, of from 0.2 to 0.6 Volts, so they should be biased. If not, the set is cut off from the radio waves that creates signals below the floor of the diodes. I dont get this.

    • @tsbrownie
      @tsbrownie 12 днів тому

      @stighenningjohansen I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean they are clipping the signal? Maybe, but you can't hear it. The diode does not have a sharp on / off. In fact it has measurable reverse flow. If you are concerned about having enough voltage to operate, I have measured 0.5 to 3 volts output.

    • @stighenningjohansen
      @stighenningjohansen 12 днів тому

      @@tsbrownie Yes, they are clipping the signal, and you cant hear it because your radio cuts off most of the signals. The diode do not conduct untill the signal is 0.2-0.6V from negative to positive.,The diodes must open at this voltage before audio can be reconstructed from the carrier wave? If diodes conducts in any other way. they are not diodes, but fakes.

If you use a Jfet maybe an antenna to the gate and one to the circuit with common ground. With maybe a coupling 10pf capacitor in the circuit. Maybe a voltage multiplier to the piezo as well.

    Looking at your video and getting ready to replace my old cable. However, the USB cable I have has a gold line instead of the one with a big black line. Is it okay to solder the gold line to the big black line here? The rest of the lines are the same in black, white, green, and red.

      @tsbrownie 13 днів тому

      @crazy08654 Check the gold wire to see if it connected to the outside of the plug (ground).

    • @crazy08654
      @crazy08654 13 днів тому

      @@tsbrownieThen the big black line on the original line is the ground line. Okay. If the grounding line is large black, I can solder the gold to the black spot, and if the gold is the grounding line, I can solder the gold to the big black spot.

      @crazy08654 You should compare the old wire and new wire plug connections and go by that. Color can vary.

    Thanks so much for this! I have one that's been passed down through a few generations and then to me, but never knew how it works since some parts (the pointer and the weigh) were missing.

      @pasanlaksitha Most oscopes will NOT measure current. They map voltage over time. There are special probes that will, but those are VERY expensive.

    So I can receive the two most powerful stations in my area, one being 1KW clear channel, and the other being 5KW at day. But what I find strange is that we have ANOTHER station here that broadcasts at 5.5KW (daytime) yet I can't pick it up on my crystal set. The weirdest part? At night I can pickup (the more powerful) shortwave stations, including one that is QUITE far from me (around 500 miles away via skywave). Alright, well, WSM comes in at night where I live, oftentimes being EXTREMELY powerful, can I pick that station up? No. The whole thing seems weird to me. Is this an antenna problem? A set problem? Or what?

    • @tsbrownie
      @tsbrownie 15 днів тому

      @qwertykeyboard5901 Not really an antenna problem. I have 2 antennas, 1 is east west the other north south. Some people have 2 more running NE to SW and NW to SE.

    I have worn thick coke bottle bottom glasses since birth. I have seen many ophthalmologists in my lifetime. Both in post war Germany and Canada. At 20, on a holiday in Germany, I bought hard contacts. Switched to the Boston lens a couple of years later. I wore contact lenses every day for 55 years. My ophthalmologist suggested cataract surgery,. I was legally blind without corrective lenses. Do I want distance or be able to see close-up? Distance of course. I like to see mountains oceans when I travel. Both my cataract surgeries went great, no more thick glasses, no more contact lenses. I have 20/20 vision in one eye, the other 20/30. Cataract surgery was 5 years ago. I have no myopia, astigmatism has disappeared. Floaters, yes. Can't be helped. Anyone who may want the name of my eyesurgeon, text or email me. I am now 80 years old and don't mind to share my story.
